Our problem isn't with the recommendation--it's a good one--but with the lack of an explanation, a problem repeated throughout NSWP. We'd prefer to see the advantages of each choice before making this decision.
The NSWP interface is clean but not especially intuitive. Tabs along the left-hand side provide access to the package's separate components, such as One Button Checkup and Norton Utilities, which expand into individual utilities when you click on them.
The tabs' organization could be better. For example, Extra Features is a useless catchall category, whose five programs could easily have been folded into existing areas of Norton Utilities. But they weren't, leaving us to guess their location. Norton SystemWorks Premier includes many tools for optimizing or repairing your PC, most of which are based on Norton Utilities and haven't changed much through the years.
One new tool added to the SystemWorks series is System Optimizer, a collection of under-the-hood operating system tweaks that control appearance, security access, and other OS features. Unfortunately, some of the controls are blatantly redundant with those already present in Windows, such as mouse options that control click sensitivity.
CheckIt Diagnostics offers useful system information, even if you don't use it for a thorough checkup. The Good Useful hard drive utilities; easy-to-navigate interface. Installation is a nightmare; poor built-in help; expensive live technical support. Symantec continues to ride the favorable reputation of Norton Utilities, introducing very few new features into Norton SystemWorks Score Breakdown Setup 7 Features 7 Support 7. For example, System Optimizer continues to show up in the catchall category, Extra Features, when it should be listed instead under a Norton Utilities secondary tab, Optimize Performance.
None of these amounts to much, but taken together, they point to a need for Symantec to revisit its interface. But it's clear that Norton SystemWorks hasn't kept up with its competition. Norton System Optimizer is a Windows tweaker whose mouse reconfiguration options look puny even when compared to those found within Windows XP.
System Mechanic still supports older Windows versions. The Norton SystemWorks Premier support package includes a digest-size user guide written in a tiny gray font with absolutely nothing on Norton Ghost or CheckIt Diagnostics. Fortunately, the in-program help files for Ghost and CheckIt Diagnostics are adequate. There's a useful searchable online knowledge base at Symantec, with a multiple path tool designed to lead users to solutions for problems.
