It was such a great feeling to be a greenhorn at CalArts, knowing that I had the faculty behind me—and the whole student body, too, trying to help me understand who I was as an artist. The faculty nurtured the type of dancer that I was, and that I am. Most of our current seven members are grads from the CalArts Writing As far as I know this is the only composer-performer doctorate program that exists.

When I came to CalArts I had limiting preconceptions about how to achieve the kinds of dramatic effects I wanted in my films. When I started CalArts I thought I was just going to make a bunch of short films and graduate and work in the animation industry. But when I got here, I realized that the art world is much larger than I had imagined. To supplement ample independent studio time over the five-week period, you will attend a series of dynamic lectures from diverse creative practitioners working at the intersection of art, technology and media; engage in discussions that grapple with contemporary contexts of making; and benefit from studio visits with guest critics as well as your residency cohort.

Although this Residency is open to artists age 18 and up, this program is not suitable for fledgling artists. The ideal candidate is a mid-career artist or MFA student who is established in their practice and conversant in arts discourse.
